Analysis of the Capsule Ingredients in Flavor Capsule Cigarettes

|
Flavor capsule cigarettes are variants of flavored cigarettes. Recently, there has been a surge in sales volume among young people, and it has become one of the major concerns in tobacco regulation. To support the policy of smoking cessation, we have analyzed the capsule ingredients found in flavor capsule cigarettes. As of September 2016, there were 29 capsule cigarettes sold in Korea, and each cigarette contained one capsule of 33 different capsules. Using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), we have performed qualitative and quantitative analysis of the capsules’ ingredients. A total of 128 ingredients from 33 capsules were detected, and there were 15 common ingredients detected in all the capsules. Most of these identified ingredients were flavorings used as cosmetic and food additives. This study provides preliminary data for the regulation of flavorings in tobacco products.
